Diamond Simulant an imitation for real Diamonds. It looks like a diamond but is manufactured using different materials. The Simulant is only similar in the appearance of the diamond and differs in physical and chemical composition. The Simulant can be natural, artificial or maybe a combination of both. The most popular Simulant is cubic zirconia CZ, a crystal form of zirconium oxide, and the other is Moissanite alternate to CZ  formed from crystal carbide which is cost-friendly and durable.

The cost of a Simulant diamond is less than that of a natural diamond. The lab-made diamond is man-made formed using the same composition of the diamond to give it the same diamond-like crystalline structure. The Simulant differ in both physical and chemical compositions. This composition is only given to give an appearance like a diamond.

How They Differ From lab-created diamonds

The lab-created diamond has the same composition as a natural diamond. Their chemical, physical and optical nature is the same. The diamonds so produced gives the same brilliance and light reflections. But the Simulated diamonds are formed using different crystal materials.

We can differentiate simulated diamonds using our natural optics but in the case of Lab-created diamonds, they can be differentiated only by a diamond expert using advanced technology.

Diamond produce more brightness, fire, and scintillation. They have a superior polish than a Diamond Simulant. The natural and lab-created diamond is more durable than a Simulant Diamond because of the hardness of the natural diamond is more.

The moh’s scale of hardness is a linear scale that scales any mineral on the basis of scratch-resistant. Diamond scores 10 and is the hardest mineral on the Earth. Simulant Diamond scores low on moh’s scale and tend to get scratches, abrasion and can be differed on external flaws & poor polish and can crack easily.

The sparkle and brilliance characteristics of Simulant help in distinguishing them from Diamond. They don’t have internal flaws. They are so colorless if they are tested on a diamond color scale they will receive the highest course. That’s why it looks brighter and whiter than a diamond.

The setting is usually set in cheaper metals. The metal used in simulated diamonds is mostly silver. The price of a Simulant Diamond is in the fractions of real diamonds. The real diamond cost thousand of dollars.

1. Cubic zirconia CZ

The Cubica zirconia has an 8.5 on moh’s scale of hardness. It gives the same brilliance as a diamond and has a good hardness. But it gets scratches easily and when dirty it loses brilliance. It has to be taken care of by dirt and oils. Cleaning can be through ultrasonic and steam.

2. Synthetic Moissanite

The moissanite is the hardest Diamond Simulant and produces more fire than a diamond. It has 9.25 points on moh’s scale. It may fuzz out its fire in some direction. It can be Cleaned using ultrasonic and steam.

3. Synthetic Rutile

Hardness on Moh’s scale is between 6 to 6.5 and it produces quite a brilliance and more fire. It is not resistant to scratches and it appears yellowish. Back facets reflect double light and it produces a frizzy appearance.
