What is responsive web designing?

Responsive web designing is a technique in which designs and code respond according to the device’s screen size, irrespective of the gadget used.

To obtain the best designs for a responsive website, it uses fluid grids, flexible images, and CSS styling, and it lets the web page alter according to the screen size. Their motive is to seamlessly customize the UI and UX of the website on different sized screens.

Why is responsive designing so important?

Everyone in the world uses the internet through any device, whether it be a smartphone, tablet, or desktop. To make websites suitable for viewing, from any of the gadgets, we need the webpage to resize, hide, shrink, enlarge, or move the content to give the viewer a good view. That is when we need to use Responsive Web Designing.

The most crucial point of responsive web designing is to figure out your audience and also their devices, which are used to visit your webpage. In a survey, it was found that approximately 56 percent of people use their mobile for viewing US websites.

According to Statista, the number of smartphone users worldwide is 3.5billion, which is 44.98% of the world’s population. This figure is up from 2016 when it was only 2.5billion users, which was 33.58% of the then world’s population. Smartphones will soon rule the world.

But designing, for every single website, for varying devices with different versions of a particular web browser, gets too complicated. So, a specific design must work for and on a variety of web browsers.

And here, the battle begins. Everyone in this designing industry is facing difficulty to cope with page designs on all the vast platforms, be it a browsing version or a hardware device. The best way to keep a check on this is by testing your sites on many different screens.

What website dimensions should I design?

A good question, indeed. Many are struggling with the same issue. There is no such thing as a standard size of a webpage. People use different web browsers to access various websites with different resolutions always. And each one of us attracted to different webpages, doesn’t it seem trouble? Yes, it is a lot of trouble for web designers like us. But we have the solution for you to design for different layouts.

Try designing at least three layouts

The original three layouts for responsive website designing are also the ones we use for our websites. Doesn’t it look good?

The layouts are:

  • Small: This one is for phones with small screen size with resolution below 600px.
  • Medium: This one is for tablets or large screen phones with resolution ranging between 600px-900px.
  • Large: This one is for desktops or personal computers with a larger displaying screen with a resolution above 900px.

These layouts will have the same content and graphical elements regardless of the device used.

Points to be focused on:

  • User friendly: Responsive designing should allow a user to have a smooth browsing experience while interacting with the web page and in viewing the content.
  • Flexible graphics: It is significant for designing a responsive website. The coding allows the graphics to adjust according to the size of the browsing page.
  • Navigation: It is used to aggregate menus and content for several ways, like scrolling, swapping, etc.
  • Engagement: People focus more on mobiles within confined space while surfing than they do it on desktops. The webpage should be very clear about the key message and make the viewer understand its whereabouts.
  • Gestures: The design must be flexible to give users an amazing experience while handling the website. Some features like to pinch on the screen to zoom in and zoom out or sliding images across the screen.

Design at least 3 versions: The resolution we generally use are under 600px, 600px-900px and above 900px. Your design should be focusing on any one of the resolutions with appropriate graphics.

Tools and resources

  • Your web browser should have the power to seek people’s attention by compelling content and attractive graphics.
  • Your mobile device is another tool that allows you to look at your webpage and get an idea about how your page will look to others.
  • Media queries are required for coding the page according to the size of the webpage.
